The Society’s Information Officer, Michael Nelson, reported at the recent AGM on the many exciting Priestley play productions and other news. For those who missed it, here’s the report in full (links added where available).
A further tour of the Royal National Theatre’s production of An Inspector Calls is taking place this year.
No more productions are pending in the United Kingdom but what may be the first German-language production of When We Are Married has been announced for the 2013/2014 Season at The Ohnsorg-Theater, Hamburg.
A total of 62 amateur productions took place in 2011, a slight increase on the previous year. The ban on productions of When We Are Married arising from the West End production restricted this number.
So far this year 32 amateur productions have been notified. A ban on productions of An Inspector Calls arising from the professional tour is restricting this number but there has been an amateur production in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
For local interest Bingley Little Theatre is mounting a production of Dangerous Corner in January 2013 and there is a production of the same play at the Caroline Social Club here in Bradford on 28 to 30 March.
Promotional Events and Theatre Visits
Presentations are continuing to be given to clubs and societies. Three are scheduled in April, June and August 2012.
11 members of The Society attended the 21 June matinee performance of Eden End at the Royal and Derngate Theatres, Northampton.
A display was mounted at Bingley Little Theatre in association with its production of the Previn-Mercer musical version of The Good Companions. A number of Society members attended the performance on 24 June. Articles and a review were written for the programme and the October 2011 issue of the Theatre’s Newsletter. A presentation on The Good Companions was made in Eldwick Parish Church Hall, also in association with the production.
The 1943 film version of When We Are Married was screened at the National Film Theatre, South Bank on 21 September 2011.
On 5 November The Society ran a day course – J B Priestley : One of the Last Great Men of English Letters – at Higham Hall, an Adult Education College in Cumbria. Eighteen students attended.
In August 2011 a two-disc CD set of the 1994 BBC Radio production of When We Are Married was released in Classic Radio Theatre series. There are now three of Priestley’s plays available in this series, the others being Time and the Conways and An Inspector Calls.
In September 2011 a three-disc DVD set of the 1980 Yorkshire Television version of The Good Companions, adapted by Alan Plater, was released.
A new book, The Vision of J B Priestley by Roger Fagge, has been published by the Continuum Publishing Corporation.
Further items have been acquired during the year and a completely new edition of the Archive Catalogue has been lodged in Special Collections, University of Bradford.
