Rare Chance to see “They Came to A City”

They Came To A City at BFI Southbank (formerly the National Film Theatre).

The Ealing Studios film version of Priestley’s 1943 play They Came to a City is to be shown on 6 and 28 December 2012 .

Directed by Basil Dearden, the film opened in August 1944 after the stage play had enjoyed a relatively long run at London’s Globe Theatre following its premiere at the Prince’s Theatre, Bradford. It features the same cast but with the fascinating addition of Priestley himself and two members of the Armed Forces (played by Ralph Michael and Brenda Bruce) to whom he talks at intervals on a hillside. The film is one of the few Ealing Studios productions which have not yet been transferred to DVD.
