As a young man J.B. Priestley supported his home town club. Here is photographic evidence of him wearing the club’s kit with pride (courtesy of Special Collections, The University of Bradford). Priestley is in the middle at the back. Tonight he would have been proud of what his home club did at Villa Park. Reaching Wembley from the fourth tier of English football is a feat for which Priestley could have written the script. Congratulations to everyone connected with the club and the city.
Finally, some pertinent words from the man himself – even more pertinent when one considers the current state of the beautiful game and what Bradford City have just achieved.
“Nearly everything possible has been done to spoil this game: the heavy financial interests;… the absurd publicity given to every feature of it by the Press; … but the fact remains that it is not yet spoilt, and it has gone out and conquered the world.” J.B. Priestley
