The unavailability on DVD of the later BBC television versions of Priestley’s classic plays has long been a source of frustration. The excellent 1983 adaptation of Dangerous Corner was finally released some time ago but only in a Region 1 format and only as part of a two-disc set featuring early television appearances by the triple Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis. Now, however, a supplier called Rare TV on DVD is offering the splendid 1987 version of When We Are Married, with its starry cast (including Timothy West, Prunella Scales and Patricia Routledge) on a multi-region DVD derived from the TV recording initially transferred to video. The disc is stated to be of ‘good video quality’ with an 8/10 rating.
This is an intriguing development but begs the question of whether, since the BBC presumably still holds the rights to the original TV version, this supplier is in breach of copyright.
