Following its coverage on the BBC Look North programme, the 75th anniversary of
the first issue of The Dalesman was also featured on the BBC’s Countryfile
programme on 27 April. Presenter Matt Baker met Bill Mitchell, the magazine’s first
editor, outside the house where the first edition was compiled in 1939. The
introductory article by Priestley was shown on camera. Bill Mitchell re-counted the
occasion when he gave Priestley a highly hazardous lift to The Dalesman office in a
small car whose flooring had been temporarily repaired with creosoted wood,
thereby casting himself as the man who might have killed Priestley.
